Spiritual Milestone: First Bible

Posted by Robert Sherrill on

Most parents desire that their child would read God’s Word and apply the truths to their young lives daily. However, the sad reality is that our kids know more about the latest video game, movie or song lyric than they know about their Bible.  Most parents are frustrated about how the current culture is having an unhealthy influence on their kids. As parents, we desire so much more for our kids than simply memorizing a few lines from the latest movie or music. Our hope is that they would “hide God’s word in [their] heart.” (Ps 119:11). But let’s never forget that if we are not intentionally teaching our child to do this, that void within their heart will be filled with other things.

We want to pull alongside parents to help them encourage their kids to read God’s word. We do this through our annual First Bible” Celebration. We set aside a Sunday in May for our first graders and their parents in Gateway Kids (Kids Town 1). On that morning, Mom and/or Dad present to their child their first Bible. Over the past couple of years this has been an amazing moment of time and a great celebration for all those involved. We also include a book mark that helps the parent and child create a habit together to read God’s word each day. We also encourage our first graders to bring their new Bibles with them each Sunday.

Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain upon it.
Proverbs 6:22 TLB
